The city Rügenwalde became of the castle Dirlow and one with the castle connected settlement based.
The name Rügenwalde probably descends from the slavic name "Dirlow" (forest) and is a place been situated in the forest of the "Rugier". The name of the city became then in 13th Century over the early temporal "Ruyenwolde" to "Rügenwalde".
Jesko, the second son of the powerful Woiwoden1) Swenza, became of king Wenzel II. of Bohemia 2) 1300 the Kastellan of the countries of Rügenwalde and Schlawe. Both cities are to lead since then in their seal the animal, a fish-griffin, of the Swenzonen3).
Poland achieved approximately from 995-1025 the rule (leaning sovereignty) over Eastern Pomerania.
In the time of 1124-1227 the country Schlawe and Stolp were governed by the pomeranian prince Ratibor I. and its descendant.
After the death of Ratibor II. (1227) took in Swantepolk II., duke of Pommerellen, the country of Schlawe and Stolp.
The principality "Rügen" acquired 1270 the countries Stolp and Schlawe as a pledge, sold it however to 1277 at Brandenburg.
After the prince line with Mestwin II. of Pommerellen had become extinct, in the long run Brandenburg the countries Schlawe, Stolp and Lauenburg inherited 1307. The pomerellish or polish rule at East Pomerania was terminated thereby.
Wartislaw IV. from Pomerania obtained 1317 from the Mark count Woldemar from Brandenburg the country Schlawe and Stolp.
By an expensive war with Mecklenburg the pomeranian princes saw themselves the areas of Stolp and Schlawe the German order of knighthood to 1318 as pledge possession. They could release the countries with the help of the cities 1341 again.
After becoming extinct the Swenzonen, which were owners of the countries of Schlawe and Stolp, the pomeranian dukes acquired the country Schlawe.
