The St. George  or St. Jürgen chapel

Another venerable church in Rügenwalde

Like that it is mentioned in honours of the contentious Dragonkiller St. George or St. Jürgen. It originates from that 15. Century, was inaugurated 1502 and repaired 1599 by mild contributions. Mentioned were the hospitals St. Spiritus and St. Jürgen and the Beguinenhof. St. Spiritus served for to the poor and nursing for the sick, St. Jürgen special from the care of the leper. Both hospitals consisted of individual partially connected small little houses. These donations were poor, since they became the charity  only from Citizens of Rügenwalde. 1680 was 30 of such little houses available from loam framework with straw or pipe to be covered, therefore with the strong hoist a fire in them was not allowed. To each house a piece of garden belonged. The Beguinen beg women, who had been connected in associations to a strictly moral and calm life.

Inhabitants of the hospital were needy people of both kinds of sex. They gave for them left the dwelling a purchase money, which could be occupied in part of payments, were frequently also completely issued. One held much a calm life the hospitals inhabitant. 1613 Peter  Dubberke is given a caution that he would go lose the house and purchase money merrily, if he did not behave calmly. Daily they had to hold common praying hours and kept therefore to 1623 the bell of the Getrud church assigned. The quite poor people became muchfold public workers related, had to clean under supervision the market and to do services as corpse carriers and gravedigger. From St. Spirtus, St. Jürgen and the Beguinenhof then the today's hospital developed, whose pleasing building of bricks from the year 1885. Of the George chapel Böttger judges: " The building, without tower, with rounded choir conclusion, prop columns and timber ceiling is perfectly plain and without architectural value."

Against the poisonous breath of the dragon

The St. Jürgen chapel in Rügenwalde and thier origin

As St. Gertrud once the starting point for the Stolpmuender suburb became, so was it St. Juergen for the Wipper suburb. The Lubin map shows us the agegrey church exactly like today looking, only a man-high Glinde runs around in circles the same. Convenient in the shade of high ashes, the quiet area offers a contrast to the traffic in the Bahnhofstraße.

The holy George, who is protection patron of the knights, as Dragon killer well-known. He refused later sacrificing the Idol and drinks the poison cup without damage. Broken on the wheel, wiht horses drilled, he is beheaded and taken up later as saint as number 14 of the emergency assistant.

Nearly all pomeranian cities, from the 13. Century, the settlement century, had their St. Juergen capel with hospital outside the city; Due to the crusades the leprosy had come to the Occident and had spread here. Because the breath should spread that dragon poisonous diseases, one based under the protection of the dragon killer leprosy hospitals, which were excluded from all contact with the human society, therefore before the town-gates situated, because the leprosy was incurable.

Already in the first quarter of the 13. Century gave it in Europe about 20.000 St. Juergen hospitals. It comes out that also the Juergen chapels must be very old. Them become already in 15. Century mentioned, must have had however later a change, since it was inaugurated on All Souls' Day 1502 by bishop Martin Karith. 1599 it is restored again, after it had become defective, from donations. It received 1623 the bell from St. Gertrud. The chapel has one room, 8,50 meters wide and twice as long. The little towering above west tower has a 1.08 meters strong outside wall and above a  1817 recasted bell of 40 centimeters of diameters.

The walls of room broke through from 13 arched windows of 1.10 x of 1.90 meters , two in the west wall, three in the choir and the four in the two side walls. The rhombic pane are calm in lead. A window in the north wall points glass painting on of 18 centimeters width. Two bears hold the coat of arms from the "von Adebar". Among them stands: Senator Lorentz Adebar 1603. He died 1599 as councillor, later secretary of the treasury and mayor, died 1628. The "von Adebar" were a very distinguished, wealthy old Patrician lineage here, as in Kolberg, which transferred some donation to the church. Likewise there is an old glass painting of 10 x of 12 centimeters in a window in the south wall, which show two crossed forks without signature. The grey whitewashed walls make a sober impression.

An old timber panel painting at the south wall, Christ with the world ball and cross on it representing and the signature: Amen, Amen, dica vobis, qui credit in me habet vitam aeternam Joh. cap.6, is without artistic value.

The pulpit with the vestry, in uniform styles makes an pleasing impression carved and in brown held. The wall shows the white painted four Evangelist. Also the altar essay exhibits only simple wood-carving; the communion in white and gold held. In the east wall is a wooden cabinet of 1.45 x of 0.95 meters, in which a baptizing dish in good driven work, the case of sin representing, is kept. Further remarkable pieces of equipment are not found.
